BLML

Support

BLML is a private chat app for one group, running on that group’s own server. If something isn’t working, the answers below cover most of it — and if they don’t, write to me and you’ll get a reply from a person.

Common questions

Do I need an invite code?
Not on chat.blml.app: anyone can create an account, so leave that field empty. The field is there for families who run their own BLML server and keep it invite-only; they will give you their code.
How do I create an account?
Tap Sign Up, choose a user name and password, enter your full name and your phone number, and leave the invite code empty. An email address is optional and nothing is sent to it.
I can't sign in.
Check that you are on the right server: Settings → Server should show the address your group gave you. User names are case-sensitive. If the password is wrong, the person who runs your server can reset it — there is no self-service reset, because there is no company holding your account.
What happens when I allow access to my Contacts?
The phone numbers and email addresses in your address book are uploaded to your group’s own server, and used only to show which of your contacts already have an account there. They are never shown to other users and never leave that server. If you decline, nothing is uploaded and you can still find people by user name. You can change your mind any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Contacts (iOS) or Settings → Apps → BLML → Permissions (Android).
I set a passcode and forgot it.
The passcode is stored only on your device and cannot be recovered. Use Log out on the lock screen and sign in again with your user name and password. Messages are re-downloaded from your server.
I'm not getting notifications.
Check that notifications are allowed for BLML in your phone’s Settings, and that the conversation is not muted (open it, tap the title, check Notifications). On Android, battery optimisation can also delay them — exempt BLML if messages arrive late.
How do I delete my account?
Settings → Account and Security → Delete account. This removes your account, and the groups you own, from your group’s server and cannot be undone. If you cannot sign in, or want to know exactly what is removed and what is kept, see Delete your account.
Where is my data kept?
On the server your group runs — not on any service of mine. Messages, photos and voice notes never pass through a third party. There are no ads, no analytics and no tracking in the app.

Privacy

BLML collects no analytics and shows no ads. The only data that leaves your device is what you send to your own group’s server. Full policy: chat.blml.app/privacy. The rules for using the app are in the Terms of Use.

Running a server

BLML is self-hosted: one server per group, run by someone in it. The server, the deployment scripts and both apps are on GitHub. If you want to run one for your own family, write to me.
